Because the Dreamcast runs Microsoft’s embedded OS “Windows CE,” the programmers of this software simply had to take advantage of the console’s ability to playback MPEG-1 video (VCD) and MPEG-3 audio (MP3). The set includes a boot disc which runs that software as well as a remote control and receiver dongle. The dongle must be plugged into any of the Dreamcast’s 4 controller ports for the VCD/MP3 player to boot. After the disc is inserted and the console is powered on, the software will boot and ask for the VCD or MP3 disc.

This video demonstrates the playback of two VCD movies. On is “The Iron Giant” which contains both Cantonese and English dialog on the left and rght audio channels, respectively. The other movie is “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.” This demo shows the many features of this player, like switching audio channels for VCDs with dual-audio like “The Iron Giant.” The remote also allows for skipping forward and backwards amongst the discs tracks as well as rewinding and fast forwarding. There are also other useful things that the Dreamcast VCD/MP3 player is capable.

Unfortunately this video does not demo the playing of MP3 discs, but after seeing this video it is easy to imagine. Similar to the Dreamcast’s built-in CD player, the MP3 player in this set shows a disc spinning while music is played.

When compared to standalone VCD players or DVD players capable of VCD playback, the Dreamcast adapter certainly stands its ground. The only features missing from it are menu support, which, while nice, is rarely found in VCD movies. The other is the ability to seek a track by a specific time, instead one must fast forward or rewind repeatedly. This player’s audio and video quality are superb and equal that of any standalone player.
